On the night before Metro Manila imposes its strictest lockdown measures since May of 2020, hundreds showed up at the Quezon City Hall in the hopes of getting vaccinated against COVID-19. The night was designated for office workers, but many, without appointments still lined up only to be told to go home.

The rush, officers on the ground say, might have been fueled by a rumored police order that unvaccinated individuals will be barred from leaving their homes, and a threat that those who refuse to get inoculated will be arrested. Both came straight from the mouth of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Today marks World Refugee Day. Around the globe, 82.4 Million individuals are displaced mainly due to conflict, violence, and persecution.⁣

In Southern Philippines, decades of armed conflict and displacement mark the lives of many. There, over 267,000 are currently internally displaced. Some continue to be forced to leave their homes due to protracted and renewed conflicts, while a number of communities have been able to return and rebuild their lives, showing glimpses of resilience and hope.⁣
⁣
The @unhcrph has been catalytic in these communities’ path to healing and growth. ⁣
⁣
Two months ago, we visited communities of displaced in Maguindanao and saw how they have become empowered to weave their way to a brighter future.⁣

Some buildings and roads may have been rebuilt (as you probably have seen from government pages and @jeffcanoy ), but tens of thousands still can't go home. Researchers and peace advocates fear the 'rehabilitation' will only give birth to a myriad of problems if selfish interests prevail.⁣

Basilan Island is in the Muslim-majority region in Southern Philippines.⁣⁣⁣ The island has a long history of rebellion calling for self-rule. Since the 70s, the military battled to suppress rebel forces.⁣ ⁣Civilians, soldiers, and rebels all lost comrades and family. More government forces were deployed, while orphaned youth from the hinterlands fought for rebels.⁣ Peace deals were signed, but the violence remained and the conflict dragged on.⁣⁣⁣ This is the story of a doctor who stayed and helped heal her homeland.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

The Tamaraw has always felt intangible, even though we are made to appreciate it as a national icon in the Philippines. I had my first encounter with a Tamaraw in 2018, on an assignment for @smilemag. He was named Kali – short of Kalibasib, a portmanteau of ‘kalikasan bagong sibol’, which translates to ‘nature’s new growth’. What was to represent the species’ recovery was in dismal state. The last captive bred Tamaraw’s left eye is close to blind, and his right ear, a fly colony. ⁣
⁣
Yesterday, October 10, Kali passed away at age 21. "You are a beacon of hope for wildlife conservation, an icon no less." - @neilanchot, the Tamaraw Conservation Program head said.
⁣
Less than 600 of the Kali's cousins remain in the wild. An overstretched and underfunded 25-man team of rangers is tasked to protect them inside 106,655 hectares of mountainous terrain in Mindoro Island.⁣
⁣
May Kali's passing be the tipping point for greater action to be taken for the conservation of this icon.⁣
⁣

In one event, tanks were displayed for kids to play around with, paratroopers glided down from the sky, and several armed units danced for the sons of men they would be shooting at on a normal day.⁣
⁣
Both sides eventually talked and listened.⁣
⁣
Rebels and their home communities learned that the army is there to bring order, not to destroy their homes. Soldiers understood these communities are deprived of government services and economic means, and that taking up arms was their last resort.⁣

Hi everyone! I'm sharing once again my work in Mindanao, titled 'Youth of the Nation Within'. The series visualizes the roots and long term effects of armed conflict in the perspective of the youth in Southern Philippines. ⁣
⁣
Doing this in light of the Anti-Terror bill that is now awaiting the signature of the Philippine President. It will automatically lapse into law on July 9 if Duterte won't sign or veto it. The proposal greatly misses the opportunity to learn from the roots of armed conflict in the country's history, and instead chooses to focus on suppression which is prone to abuse.⁣

Arlyn Jawad-Jumao As grew up watching military operations as a kid in the 70s. Her father died of an explosion from a rebel landmine in 1977.⁣
⁣
This very environment — of constant war, hatred, and fear — pushed her towards a path for healing.⁣
⁣
Arlyn now runs her own clinic. Among her regular patients are children, wives, and rebels themselves.⁣
⁣
But it was three young patients that changed the way Arlyn saw her homeland.⁣
⁣
The first was a traumatised boy who hid when bandits raided their village. The second was a girl who witnessed her father get beheaded; she spat on Arlyn’s face in the clinic. And third, a girl who saw her dead father’s bloodied head; she threw away what she could lay her hands on.⁣
⁣
This led her to form 'Save the Children of War in Basilan'. Its mission is to play with children.⁣
